Charcoal is and always will be my favourite art material. Because of the softness of its drawing edge, charcoal tends to favour broad, vigorous draftsmanship, with an emphasis on mass and movement rather than on linear precision. It is about LIVING IN THE MOMENT. It is crushing the white paper.
Matisse would make really detailed charcoal drawings and tear them up. He wouldn’t leave them about … I understand what he was doing: discovering what’s there … to make the line meaningful, to find a linear solution.
Charcoal can be anything you want, anything you feel – an absolute passion, a soul-crushing pain, an endless happiness.. all this thanks to a warm soft texture, that paper absorbs from the hands of an artist.
I found myself in charcoal because my art is accusation, expression, passion.
