Apple Picking

Apple picking is, and has seemingly always been, a quintessential fall activity – a total must. What better way to enjoy a fall day than getting the family out of the house and into the country. Besides, is there anything more delicious than taking a bite from a perfectly succulent apple plucked right from the tree? I certainly don’t think so.

We drove to Verger Gibouleau, which is well known for over 100 years with more than 10 000 apple trees! It is located just 20 min away from Montreal, where families can enjoy apple picking, picnics and tractor-drawn wagon rides. The apple picking season starts from mid-August to late October. The standard apple picking bag provided allows for collecting approximately twenty pounds and costs 18$.

Apple picking is a great activity that the whole family can enjoy together, however, including kids in any activity inevitably makes it more difficult. Here you are some tips how to enjoy the time with your little ones:

• make your research and choose the better time to go;
• to get the most out of the trip, prepare your little ones (How do apple trees grow? How do apples get into the grocery store?)
• discuss rules before you go: safety, being kind to tress, etc.
• make it a day trip: pack snacks or lunch that will complement the fresh apples;
• plan what you will do with all those apples if you think on getting a LOT and let your kid help you.

 Fall is my absolute favorite time of year. There’s something magical about any changing season, but fall is especially enchanting with it’s cool crisp air, warm spicy beverages and the promise of many feasts and gatherings.

СОБИРАЕМ ЯБЛОКИ НА ФЕРМЕ

Канадцы любят и умеют сочетать полезное с приятным. Благодаря этому сочетанию так популярен осенний сбор яблок, когда любая семья может приехать на ферму и не просто купить яблоки, а самостоятельно их собрать. Довольно интересное занятие, особенно, если нужно чем-то заняться с детьми! По цене яблоки получаются дешевле, чем в магазине, хотя учитывая траты на бензин и время, итоговая стоимость, возможно, получится выше. Но смысл тут именно в том, чтобы хорошо провести время — приехать и самому насобирать!

Ферм вокруг любого крупного города много и существует даже специальный календарь, на котором можно отметить — осенью ездят собирать яблоки, тыквы и кукурузу, поздней весной и летом — клубнику, чернику, абрикосы. На фермах также можно прокатиться на тракторе или пообедать в деревенском кафе.

Как же проходит сбор яблок? Фермы с фруктовыми садами обычно находятся за городом, так что туда надо ехать на машине, впрочем, как практически в любое место в Канаде. На ферме Verger Gibouleau, где мы собирали яблоки, есть главное здание, где можно купить уже собранные фрукты или варенья, джемы, соки. Тут же рядом есть небольшое «деревенское» кафе, где пекут яблочные пироги.
